Process of Competition

Semi- and Grand Finale

After the national selections there will be two continuing steps in the competition with a semifinal and a grand finale. The competitors will be wearing number tags during the ballet classes and the number will remain the same throughout the competition. The stage is minimum 10 meters wide and 10 meters deep.

Content

Juniors can present one classical variation and one contemporary solo or two classical variations.

Senior are required to present one classical variation and one contemporary solo.

Each variation/solo shall have a maximum length of 2 minutes and 30 second, all music and dance movements included.

The classical variation has to be from the existing known classical repertoire with appropriate music.

The contemporary solo has to include different dynamics and floor work. Point shoes shall not be worn for the contemporary solo.

The Jury

The jury of the semi- and grand finale will consist of one chairman and 3-5 jury members. The jury should have a broad experience of ballet and contemporary dance as well as the dance development of students in the age of 14-19. The jury should have a balance of gender and ballet and contemporary.

In the semi- and grand finale competitors are judged on their dance technique, artistry and musicality. The jury will give an overall point to each competitor including all the three criteria.

The jury will also see the competitors take ballet class so the jury can familiarize itself with the competitors and to make some personal notes. No points are given at the ballet class.

The jury member shall not be employed or be strong associated with any of the participating schools in the competition with the exceptions for the artistic directors of the main ballet companies. The jury is not permitted to have any contact with any students or staff from the schools of the competitors during the competition.

The decision of the jury is final and cannot be changed.

Semifinal

The semifinalists will perform their two solo for the jury on stage with costume, makeup and standard stage light.

There will be individual time for all competitors to rehears on stage.

In the semifinal the point scale ranges from 1 to 14. Every point is unique and will be given out once for each solo in each division (junior/senior). After all competitors have presented their first solo the points will delivered to the jury coordinator. The same procedure will be applied after the second solo.

The 15 places of the grand finale will be divided between the two divisions (junior/senior) as following. 14 places will be divided proportionately with the amount of competitors of the two divisions. After all competitors have presented both solos and before the points have been summarized, 1 additional place for the grand finale will be distributed between the two divisions by the chairman of the jury’s discretion.

After all competitors have presented both solos and the chairman of the jury has decided the additional place for one of the two divisions (junior/senior), the points will be summarized. The competitors with the highest total amount of points in each division, will advance to the grand finale. If two competitors have the same amount of total points, the one with most of the highest points from each jury member will be selected.

The competitors not selected to the final will receive an individual feedback session with a member of the jury and have ballet class and be able to watch the grand finale.

Grand Finale

The selected finalists will perform their two solo for the jury on stage with costume, makeup and standard stage lighting.

The points from the semifinal will not be added or carried over to their score in the grand finale.

The jury will judge and give points at both the general rehearsal and the grand finale. The point scale ranges from 1 to the same number as the number of competitors in each division (junior/senior). Every point is unique and will only be given once in each division (junior/senior) and will cover the performance of both solos of each finalist. The points from the general rehearsal and the grand finale will be summarized.

The winners will be selected from the finalists with highest points. If two competitors have the same amount of total points, the one with most of the highest points from each jury member will be selected.
